"China will be the next superpower" (323)

How will China be the next "superpower"?
China was able to become the next "superpower" through the way they were a major classical civilization but were there since the Ancient era, giving them a continuous existence. They were also able to see an exponential amount of economic growth as they became an important factor in the trade, especially on the sea road. They were also able to see growth through their inventions in technology and engineering. Therefore leading to improvement in industrial growth through the development of new techniques and practices. Another important thing that became important in China was rice as they were able to grow their rice through the drought and could grow it quickly. The increase in food production (rice) helped lead to an increase in population.

Merit system: hiring people based on their merit, meaning that someone would get a job depending on who their family was and/or on how much land they owned or had.

Canal system: became important as it not only provided water to people but also became a way that people could move items, through the use of boats, from one play to another fairly easily and for much less.

Examination system: Was a way to demonstrate ones merit. Was a test that would determine the kind of path one would take and those who were of the wealthy often did better as they had the resources to do so.
-> sometimes small towns would put all their money into one child so they could take the test and do well so that they could live a better life and gain more

China was involved in the world around it during the classical period through trade but it stayed regionally (sea roads- Indian Ocean trade network). However this did not stop others (peoples from Afro-Eurasia) from going to China. China did not try to go to other places and overthrow them and then force them to take over their religion, practices, and ideas. Due to this China's boarders were able to expand and maintain this expansion.

For women in classical China they were seen as less than men, the inferior half. They often involved in foot binding, where their feet would be broken and then wrapped up. Then after some time their foot would be broken again and once again wrapped up. This was done to women as they thought it was more beautiful for women to have small feet. Continuously, this practice was a way to keep the women "trapped" as it was difficult for them to walk after this procedure was done.

Tribute system: was a way of paying respect and would come through gifts such as art and money
